A popular, must have handbag among today's celebrities is the bamboo handle bag. However this fashion accessory design is not a new trend at all but in fact was first created of 60 years ago by Gucci. In 1947 this great fashion house created the first bamboo handle design named the 0633 partly due to necessity rather than design.

It is part of the famous story that after World War 2 due to the scarcity and short supply of raw materials, particularly leather and metals that cane was used as an alternative and the bamboo handle was created. The cane is heated over a flame and hand molded and bent into a curve. An inspired design, invented and brought about by the circumstances and rationing after the war. 

This was the bag of choice for 50's film stars including screen legend Ingrid Bergman and later on in the 60's by Jackie Kennedy and  Vanessa Redgrave making it a vintage iconic product. In the 80's Princess Diana was regularly seen with a bamboo handled handbag and today a revised version has been worn by singer Florence Welsh and model Carla Bruni. Today the bamboo handle can be seen in many collections this season and on the catwalks of Milan, London and New York.
