Ghibli, Fontanelli and Paolo Masi Luxury Handwoven Intrecciato Italian Designer Handbags

If you are a lover of designer handbags you will be very familiar with the woven, interlaced leather bags. The technique is also known as intrecciato and made famous by high end design brand Bottega Veneta. It was in the 60's when Bottega Veneta ventured into making accessories and they chose to use this woven technique more through necessity because their sewing machines which were normally used for their clothing range were inadequate and only able to stitch thin leather.

In fact way before Bottega Veneta started their range of now iconic bags, Fontanelli a family run Italian company based in Florence and established in 1860, were using this technique to create these lightweight soft leather woven handbags. Master craftsman and cutters who have learnt their trade over many years create the most beautiful soft woven leather bags. They use this technique not only on their hobo shoulder bag range but also on their more structured tote handbags and even their laptop business bags such as the Fontanelli Aristea.

Intrecciatto is a hand weaving technique using long, slim strips of leather interlacing to form a repeating plain, basket weave at differing angles and a more complicated optical pattern that forms diamond shapes. It takes expert artisans whose skills have been passed down generation after generation and many man hours to produce these various patterns. The most difficult, complex and time consuming by far, being the optical pattern that involves both master cutters and artisans to create a perfect geometric piece of handwoven leather that can then be used to produce an exquisite handbag, purse or briefcase. A wonderful example of this the Paolo Masi Optical Weave Hobo Bucket Bag.

Paolo Masi is one of our exclusive Italian suppliers. Based in Florence, Italy they produce exquisite intrecciato handbags using leather that is washed and then dried in wooden barrels after weaving by hand. This traditional tanning technique makes each beautiful bag unique with its own characteristic markings.

This style of bag is proving popular with our customers and we always are committed to providing the best Italy has to offer. That is why we are now proud to announce that we have added the high end brand Ghibli to the Attavanti range. Again an exclusive brand based in Florence, Tuscany, who were established in 1968. Ghibli is famous for it's luxury pieces and each handbag is a sumptuous work of art and beauty. Each handbag is a masterpiece of craftsmanship with the weave pattern exposed on the inside as well. A fine example of one of their bags is the Ghibli Hand Woven Leather Shopper.
