Harris Tweed Bag For A Stylish Fashion Country Look

Autumn Winter this year has seen the return and resurgence of luxury wool tartans and tweeds on the catwalk. These exclusive and beautiful artisan handmade Harris Tweeds and Scottish tartans, also sometimes called plaid, are also a favourite of the country set. Ironically though, tweeds and colourful tartans have in the past been associated with punk, preppy and grunge fashions but this country style is now perfect for the latest Autumn Winter high fashion look. At the Paris Fashion week Fall/Winter, designer Maria Grazia Charui collection for Christian Dior showed beautiful open weave skirts and separates in classic reds, greens, black and white. Designer Marine Serre went for full on with statement tartan suits and Lanvin a more reserved traditional kilts and ponchos.

Tartan has an ancient history, the earliest known in Scotland can be dated back to the third and fourth centuries AD. Elsewhere in the world tartan cloth with its classic criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands of multiple colours has been found dating back to 3,000 BC. Unbelievably it was actually banned by law in 1746 by the English in the so called "Dress Act" to try to bring warrior clans under control. This thankfully was repealed in 1782 and immediately the kilt with other clothing was adopted as symbol of Scotland's national dress. The original tartan patterns though were initially regional patterns and chosen by the wearer as to the one they preferred and it wasn't until the nineteenth century that patterns were associated to particular clans and families.

Exclusive Harris Tweed is only made in the Outer Hebrides on the Islands of Lewis, Harris,Uist and Barra. The Islanders in their own homes use traditional techniques that have not changed over the years. The brand is protected by law, Harris Tweed must be woven from pure virgin wool that has been spun and dyed by an islander from the Outer Hebrides. The resulting cloths in their distinct herringbone and subtle tartan patterns are renowned all over the World. It's often copied but never matched and anything cloth that does not follow these strict rules cannot be labelled with the authenticity logo the Harris Tweed Orb Mark.

There is no need to go for the whole ensemble and wear head to toe to create this. A stylish addition to a well thought out Autumn Winter outfit is all that is needed, such as a skirt, jacket or a bag. It is after all important to be classy with it. At Attavanti we have a stylish range of beautiful Harris Tweed and leather handbags by Italian designer Bonfanti. This is the perfect way to add a pop of exclusive Scottish woven cloth to your outfit to create a chic country look or high fashion catwalk preppy.
