Choosing The Perfect Backpack

Posted by Attavanti on 27th Jun 2017

The history of the backpack is a little vague as through the ages man has carried heavy loads on his back in order to help distribute the weight, offering a better centre of gravity and allowed them to carry more over longer distances and leaving their arms free. As hunter gatherers, this was essential for their survival and what is thought to be remnants of a backpack were discovered on a frozen body in the Alps that dated back to 3300 BC.

The more familiar backpack that we know today probably found its roots in Scandinavia around 140 years ago and was made of leather and wood. The American military designed a backpack of their own around the time of the first world war in order for their soldiers to carry heavy kit over long distances. The logistics of modern warfare made this absolutely essential.

Today the backpack is still a very fashionable item and the choice of styles and sizes is simply staggering. So it's worth taking a little time to consider what type of backpack would suit your needs. Lets take a look at a few aspects to help you make a considered choice.

Functionality
Think about how you intend to use your backpack. Maybe it's for the daily commute to work or for that occasional trip away or possibly a statement accessory instead of a handbag. By their nature backpacks tends to be very functional with lots of pockets but consider what you are likely to want to carry. For instance if you are a student or you need the backpack for work, you will probably need to carry books, documents and possibly a laptop. So you may want to consider a Roncato leather and nylon backpack which is actually one of our latest rucksacks available in either black or brown or possibly a Giorgio Fedon NJP backpack in a choice of brown, black or blue, all with the very smart orange interior fabric. Don't forget to take into account your stature. If you are small or petit, a very large backpack may not suit.

For the frequent traveller we do have possibly the perfect backpack. It is a Trolley Backpack by Giorgio Fedon, perfect at airports and train stations as easily converts.

If you should choose to choose a backpack in the Pratesi range such as the Montalbano, you will be pleased to discover that they all come with a very functional interior LED light, perfect for finding items in your bag when the light is poor.

Also be mindful about comfort. Check that side of bag that fits against your back is fairly smooth and without buckles or other hardware that may stick into you and check, if its a large rucksack, that the shoulder straps are wide and preferably padded to help disperse the weight on your shoulders as per the ones on the Giorgio Fedon Leather Backpack.

Durability
It goes without saying you want your backpack to last. All of our range are either nylon or leather or a combination of the two so are sure to provide good service for years to come. Nylon makes for a very strong fabric, easily able to repel the knocks and spills of daily life. Leather of course is a very desirable natural product, hard wearing, water proof and easily able to take knocks and strong enough to help protect the bags contents. What's more it tends to look better with age. The Pellevera Rialto would be a perfect example of this.

Style
In this day and age style is always very important. Even if your requirement is for a work bag for that daily commute, it is still desirable to have a backpack that is smart and expensive looking. It's an indicator of your standing in the world so to choose one of our backpacks such as the Giorgio Fedon Leather and Nylon Backpack you know it will have that certain Italian style built in.

As mentioned previously backpacks are very fashionable at the moment. Rather than carrying a handbag or shoulder bag, the latest fashion accessory now is a stylish backpack. This tends to be smaller than your normal rucksack and  in brighter colours. The Giorgio Fedon Amelia Leather Backpack is a perfect example of this and comes in either red, blue or green. Another option is the Carbotti Woven Leather Backpack, a very stylish lightweight bag in hand woven leather.

Alternatively you may be looking for a real statement piece. Italian artisan Pratesi offers some very unique styles. The guitar backpack is a very eye catching bag and comes in a range of sizes and colours. Or you may want to consider their cross body saddle bag.

Cost
The price is always a very important consideration. We have a range to suit most budgets start at around £145 to just over £400 and when you consider you are buying a big chunk of Italian style and a great investment, we think that represents good value for money.
