The Hot Bag for the Summer 2019

This is the time of year when most people are looking forward to the longer, warmer days of summer. We have already had a couple of false starts this year especially with the fabulous Easter break and this has already given us the opportunity to take stock and review (and probably iron) our summer clothes from last year.

Inevitably a shopping trip is required to add a few extra pieces to rejuvenate our wardrobe. Of course there are also the accessories to consider and if you were really on trend last year you will already have a woven wicker bag. If you do have one, you will definitely need to get it out for this summer because this style of bag is back with a vengeance. It’s easy to see why, as it is just so versatile and simply works for most occasions, whether you’re on a night out, a shopping trip or even for a day on the beach whilst on holiday.

Handcrafting bags from woven wicker is an ancient craft that has been around for hundreds if not thousands of years and it’s easy to see why. This natural material is strong versatile, lightweight, easy to clean and can be woven into any size and shape. A variant is the straw or raffia bag which tends to offer a more relaxed softer look.

The major brands such as Prada, Fendi and Gucci have already displayed their wicker bags on the catwalk and there is certainly no shortage on the High Street. I would definitely consider investing one for the summer because I think this trend is going to run and run.

Which one should you buy?

Well there are plenty of styles to choose, from large tote shoppers to small clutch bags, so before you rush down to the shops just consider firstly your budget and secondly what you are likely to use it for. For a big brand name you are likely to pay up to £2,000 to £3,000 whereas on the High Street you can buy a simple straw bag for just a few pound, so maybe the sensible choice is to go somewhere in between. To determine what size and style would suit you best, consider how you intend to use it. If it’s mainly for shopping trips or a flexible holiday bag then a large tote would probably be best but if it a general handbag you want to match to outfits and those special evenings out, then a structured grab bag may be more appropriate.

The bang on trend wicker bags this season tend to be a mix of leather and wicker which makes for a very stylish and attractive combination. I really love this look and it provides the opportunity to add some colour to contrast with the natural wicker. I also think the addition of leather makes it a little more luxurious, especially if it’s Italian leather which tends to be eco friendly vegetable tanned. Take a look at our wicker bag collection at Attavanti. I particularly like this Paolo Masi bag with the mock bamboo handle.

I really hope this years summer is as good as last years so I can make the most of my wicker handbag.
